SMA 2012 Pre-Doctoral Student Initiative

All,

The Southern Management Association has a Pre-Doctoral Student Initiative that may be of interest to you.

A member of the PhD Project LinkedIn Group shared this info.

SMA 2012 Pre-Doctoral Student Initiative

New this year, the Southern Management Association (SMA) is sponsoring a pre-doctoral initiative to provide undergraduate and master’s level students the opportunity to learn about doctoral programs and/or to present their research in a scholarly venue.

Pre-doctoral paper session:

Pre-doctoral students are encouraged to submit their research to the pre-doctoral track through the regular submission process at www.southernmanagement.org.  In addition to the types of papers accepted by the rest of the tracks, students are encouraged to submit review papers and other non-traditional research papers.  We anticipate that pre-doctoral students may have written papers or cases in, for example, capstone management courses that would be suitable for submission.  If you have any questions about what papers might be acceptable, please contact the track chair, Dr. Jonathon Halbesleben, University of Alabama, at jhalbesleben@cba.ua.edu.

The deadline for submissions is April 8th, 2012, at 11.59pm.

Accepted papers will be presented as posters during the first session of the main program (Thursday morning).

Pre-doctoral Consortium:

The Pre-Doctoral Consortium will be held at the SMA convention site, the Westin Beach Resort and Spa, in Fort Lauderdale Florida, Wednesday, October 31, 2012.

The Consortium is a half-day program designed to help undergraduate and graduate students who are committed to, or seriously considering, earning a doctoral degree.  The goals of the Consortium include: (1) helping students to gain a better understanding of key factors to consider in applying to doctoral programs, and (2) to provide students with a “realistic preview” of life as a doctoral student and faculty.  In addition, the participants will have lunch with the doctoral students attending the doctoral consortium, and will also meet doctoral faculty, allowing them to begin networking and finding the right programs for them.

The program will begin with lunch with current doctoral students attending the doctoral consortium, and faculty presenters.  The afternoon consortium will then feature several nationally recognized scholars who will lead panel sessions and round table discussions on such topics as “How to decide which programs are right for me”, “The ins and outs of grad school applications”, and “Life as a doctoral student and beyond”.

The Consortium will award $500 stipends to invited participants.  In addition, lunch on the day of the Consortium will be provided, courtesy of SMA, and there will be a networking reception in the evening.  If that is not enough encouragement to attend, SMA has also instituted a special track for submission of pre-doctoral student papers.  This will be a poster session held on the morning of Thursday November 1st.  Attendees are encouraged to remain for the rest of the conference.

The deadline for consortium application is September 1st, 2012. All applicants must submit (a) a registration form (final page of this document, (b) a recommendation letter from a member of their faculty, and (c) a copy of their vita (resume). (If selected to attend, the vita will be included in the notebook distributed to all participants to facilitate networking.)  If there are more applicants than spaces in the consortium, preference will be given to students who also submit a research paper to the Pre-doctoral track.

Please submit consortium registration materials electronically to Dr. Lucy Ford, Saint Joseph’s University, at lford@sju.edu.  If you have questions, please contact Dr. Ford by email, or by phone at (610) 660-1116.
