Applying to Programs - DOCNET Helpful Hints

DOCNET is a consortium of business doctoral programs.  DOCNET holds events across the country to introduce individuals to pursuing a doctorate in business.

On the DOCNET website, there is a section on "Preparing Your Application".  Since Fall 2011 deadlines are looming, I thought I would pass the webpage along.

GMAT - GMAT Club Math Study Tips

New to the Math forum? Please read this first : GMAT

Check out this link from the GMAT Club. The rest of the site is helpful also.

Lifestyle - AngelFood Network

UPDATE:  This organization has ceased to exist as of September 2011.  Refer to local area agencies for a similar program.

Since doctoral students are on a limited budget, just wanted to pass along a tip about the AngelFood Network.  AngelFood provides low-cost food boxes that range in cost from $20-$40 that can feed a family.  There are no income restrictions.  AngelFood is distributed via local churches and organizations.  To obtain more information, go to http://www.angelfoodministries.com/ .

Website/Blog Recommendation - OCIS PHD Students

This website is geared toward Communication and Information Systems doctoral students, but there is a wealth of information that can be used related to other disciplines.

The site includes links to statistics training resources, writing resources, and other research tools.  The site also discusses the doctoral student lifestyle with articles on children, budgeting, surviving the first year.

Check it out at http://www.ocisphd.com/ .

Reading Recommendation - Getting What You Came For

This book is an excellent tool to understand the doctoral process.  It is well written and a good reference book.   I would recommend purchasing this book.  It is sold at major booksellers.

There is a web review of this book at http://peterc.org/pedia/getting-what-you-came-for/.

Funding - SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program

Great opportunity for eligible participants!  http://www.sreb.org/page/1074/doctoral_scholars.html

Eligibility per the SREB website follows:

If you:
  • are a Ph.D. candidate. Scholars are ineligible in all other doctoral degree programs, including D.B.A., D.D.S., D.N.P., D.P.T., D.V.M., Ed.D., J.D., M.D., Pharm.D., etc.
  • are within the first year of the Ph.D. program or are expecting admission before the
academic year begins. (required for the Doctoral Award)
  • have completed all course work and comprehensive/preliminary exams and have defended the prospectus successfully before the academic year begins. (required for the Dissertation Award)
  • are a U.S. citizen or have legal permanent resident status.
  • are a member of a racial or ethnic minority (including African-American, Asian American, Hispanic/Latin American, Native American or others).
  • hold or are scheduled to receive a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university by the beginning of the fall semester. The program particularly encourages applicants who seek Ph.D.s in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math), which have particularly low minority representation.
  • are accepted into or enrolled in a full-time, campus-based Ph.D. program (not online or distance learning) at a participating institution in a participating state by August, the start of the academic year.
  • are not employed outside your department or discipline.
  • plan to become a full-time college or university faculty member after earning your Ph.D.
NOTE:
  • Applicants attending or enrolling in institutions in GA, MD, MS, SC, TN or VA must submit verification of in-state residency from the university. This is not the same as "in-state tuition status" granted to some out-of-state scholars.
  • Recipients who are residents of AL, AR, KY and WV, in rare instances, are funded by these states to attend out-of-state universities.

Hello and Welcome!

Welcome to Future PhDiva!

I was so inspired by my attendance at the 2010 PhD Project, that I decided to start a blog to share information about the PhD in Accounting that I have gathered along the way.  This is an informal blog and is by no means authoritative, but this is just a way to reach out to like minded folks.

Take a read and let me know what you think.  I will try to post at least monthly.

Enjoy and pursue your passion....get a PhD!
